The Kazusa/Chiba area was selected for the FY2009 MEXT City Area Program (development stage), and efforts have been made to form an industry-academia-government collaboration cluster to overcome immunological and allergic diseases based on advanced genome analysis technology. In this regional cluster, “Kazusa DNA Research Institute”, a research center of advanced genomic science, “Chiba University”, a global center for education and research in immune system regulation and treatment, and the “RIKEN Research Center for Allergy and Immunology”, a world leader in basic research, collaborate with each other to promote a wide spectrum of research activities from basic to clinical research and transfer the achievements to industry. The objectives are to contribute to the development of advanced medical treatments for immunological and allergic diseases that are still very much needed despite rapid progresses in medicine in recent years. The regional cluster is expected to support speedy and accurate diagnosis and selection of the best treatment method, eventually creating new businesses.
